Reason for becoming an Adventurer: Last year in June 2010, my 9 year old son, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Harry went through 18 rounds of chemo and an 18 hour operation to have the tumour removed which was located in his shoulder joint and humerus. Harrys shoulder is now fused, but we are thankful that we found the tumour early enough or the outcome could have been very different. Whilst going through treatment we met a number of families on the ward, in particular Emily and Rick and Stacey Thorburn who were already involved in raising money so I decided to get on board and help to raise money where I could.
Since becoming part of the Adventurers, I have met more parents from the ward and an amazing number of people who are keen to get involved. An amazing bunch of people who are prepared to work hard to raise money, with a little bit of partying along the way.
Having a child go through cancer is a parents biggest nightmare. Not only is it the initial treatment and whether or not they are going to survive this, but if they do survive then how will the treatment affect them later on in life. There are so many side effects of chemotherapy and radiation which most people have no idea about, but they are all very real for the families who have been affected.
To make a difference to the extent, that we actually put all the nurses and doctors of Ward 3B out of a job, would be a dream come true, and would definitely be a cause for celebration.
